Some of our favourite moments at Maiden come from the stories our community brings to us. This one started on a cricket field in Uganda.
Anna H was volunteering with Cricket Without Boundaries, the charity that uses cricket to support communities across Africa, when she was asked to officiate a women’s tournament between Uganda, Namibia, Hong Kong China and Nepal. It was there she met Janet Mbabazi, captain of the Uganda women’s cricket team.
“I was inspired by the stories of the Uganda women’s cricket team and their lack of access to high quality kit, among the other participation barriers they’ve overcome,” Anna told us.
Janet is also one of the leading ambassadors for the Soroti Girls Cricket Academy. When she got in touch with Anna to ask for white kit, so her girls could play a domestic red ball multi day game, Anna didn’t hesitate. “I jumped at the opportunity. I couldn’t think of a better company to get involved than Maiden Cricket.”
The academy players are now kitted out head to toe in Maiden whites, and the photos speak for themselves. According to Janet, the girls feel proud, confident and united as a team in their new kit.
The kit was printed with help from our partners at MR Cricket Hockey, who were brilliant in getting the Cricket Without Boundaries and Maiden branding onto the shirts. We’re grateful for their support in making this happen.
Anna put it best: “I think they look like fantastic, strong, capable women.”
That is exactly why Maiden exists. Kit designed for women and girls is not a luxury. It is part of what helps players feel they belong on the field, whether that is a club ground in England or a red ball fixture in Soroti.
A huge thank you to Anna, to Janet, to Cricket Without Boundaries and to MR Cricket Hockey. We cannot wait to see what these players go on to achieve.
