Built for female athletes

Before and after: Women comparing men's cricket apparel to the perfect fit of Maiden's ladies cricket wear.

Should Women’s Equipment be any different from Men’s?

Of course it should be. But that hasn’t been the case….well since cricket started.

If you look at other sports, they seem to have evolved and adapted. Tennis rackets are lighter with small handles for women to choose from, golf clubs adapted in length and flex and weight. Even football boots are now being designed from scratch with women’s feet and knees and hips taken into consideration. The reason…….well we play better, get less injuries….in essence perform!

So, at Maiden we have taken the same approach to our kit.

Why the Right Cricket Trousers Matter

How Maiden Sets the Standard

It’s not rocket science, having the right size, comfort and fit of cricket trouser obviously improves our ability to move, stretch, run and feel comfortable on and off the pitch. Wearing something designed for men or something that doesn’t take our needs into consideration obviously won’t work. The Maiden trousers were designed with this in mind. We looked at the fabric, the cut, the stretch, the length, the breathability & protection.

Maiden’s Fabric Built for Female Athletes

We tested lots, but this felt like the right combination of robustness and comfort, whilst also providing breathability.

It’s important to have something that’s robust to deal with running, diving, wearing pads and the rough & tumble of cricket but also has the stretch and comfort and won’t be see through. That’s why Maiden uses a performance blend of polyester for durability and spandex for stretch, comfort, moisture-wicking, and breathability.

The Maiden Cut, designed for the Female Cricket Body

We need something that’s flat waisted to ensure its streamlined and helping our silhouette. But more importantly is styled correctly for our form and crotch. But also able to fit thigh pads underneath or over the top without compromise.

Additionally allowing for breathability when playing, which is why we added the knee mesh. All of these needs are specific to women and girls in cricket and that is why Maiden builds trousers cut for women from the ground up, rather than adapting men’s or unisex designs.

Maiden’s Built-In Protection:

Built-in shorts provide modesty, comfort, and light protection. This allows the outer fabric to remain lightweight without becoming transparent. It’s a small detail, but a game-changing one for comfort and confidence and it’s why Maiden includes them as standard.

The Length:

Everyone’s legs are different, actually most of us have one leg just slightly longer than the other. Obviously having trousers the “right” length allows us to move more easily and looks smart. Too long or too short doesn’t help. Equally Women’s legs tend to be longer than men’s. So again we wanted to reflect that in the design. Maiden uses adjustable “poppers” so players can tailor the length day-to-day, season-to-season (or even as you grow).

How to choose the right Cricket Gloves?

You need the basics around protection for the fingers and knuckles and palms, but we think there are some additional bits for women to consider. Maiden gloves are designed with slimmer fingers and we have adjusted the length (women’s index and ring fingers tend to be more similar length than men). We also slimmed down the soft leather on the palm for greater feel and added a load of ventilation.

How to choose the right Cricket Pads?

You need great protection but you need to be able to move, run, turn comfortably and quickly, so Maiden pads are shaped to match. Women’s legs tend to be slimmer from the knee to ankle, so why not slim down pads to reflect this? This makes it easier to run, it also allows us to reduce the weight, without loosing any of the protection. Overall it’s a better fitting pad that again means better performance, because its actually designed around what women need, rather than adapting what men have.

Cricket Bags are all the same – Right? Wrong!

Yes – overall you need the space for gloves, pads, bats, helmets, shoes etc. So there is no getting away from the size. You also need the means to carry or wheel it. But that doesn’t mean bags can’t be adapted. Maiden took inspiration from the rucksack world and really liked elements that the likes or Ortovox had done for ski touring backpacks, who have adapted their packs for women. S

So we narrowed our shoulder straps (women have narrower shoulders), we added a chest strap, so the weight is carried on the shoulders and not the lower back, we added one or two more compartments, we even included a detachable personal bag, so that we have somewhere useful to put….well….girls stuff that we need to store during a game and for afterwards. Not all bags are the same!
